Italy On Screen Today

2017 Edition

Welcome to ITALY ON SCREEN TODAY 2017

The second edition of Italy on Screen Today has been designed on the basis of the sound foundations laid last year.
In fact, the second edition was not all that surprising since audiences in the U.S., especially in New York, love Italian cinema and are able to recognize quality films. In any case, it was a great pleasure and relief to see that this major organizational effort was rewarded with a high number of viewers for our program and a very warm welcome for Paola Cortellesi, our guest together with director Andrea Pellizzer and William R. Pace, Director of the World Federalist Movement, also thanks to the support of the Italian and U.S. institutions gave us during the first edition.
So, this year, we have developed this festival and its fil program with a strong motivation and a growth path in mind. We welcome you to the second edition of Italy on Screen Today, thanks to the contribution of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism, with the support of the Italian Consulate in New York, in collaboration with Rai Cinema and three important Universities, John D. Calandra Institute, Casa Italiana Zerilli Marinò - New York University and Stony Brook University, under the Aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and of the European Parliament.
From October 19 to 22 the Proshansky Auditorium, the Casa Italiana Zerilli Marinò - New York University and the Stony Brook University will host the best Italian contemporary films in New York; premieres, great authors, young talented directors, the most iconic faces and meetings with the media and the festival's guests. In this connection, our warmest gratitude goes to Sergio Castellitto, director and actor, who will be our guest of nhonor during the screening of his films: Non ti muovere and Venuto al mondo; on this occasion, he will receive the Nino Manfredi Art Excellence Award, to pay tribute to his career. This award, launched together with Nino Manfredi's family, will be our way to celebrate Nino, an unparalleled and never forgotten symbol of the Italian cinema and of the Italian acting school. On the same evening, we will have the great privilege to hand the Vento d'Europa - Wind of Europe International Award to Vittorio Storaro, the master of film photography, a great film photographer and cinematographer, who has already won three Oscars.

The secon edition will focus on immigration in collaboration with the MigrArti Project promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Tourism: a series of short movies with the aim to foster intercultural dialogue through film projects featuring immigrant communities already establishe din Italy; it is a selection of the best ones screend during the 74th Venice Film Festival that is an integral part of our program.
I will have the pleasure to host Paolo Masini, creator and ccordinator of MigrArti (advisor to Dario Franceschini, the Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage and Tourism) who will introduce the project and Andrea Bartoli, the representative of the Sant'Egidio Community with the U.N., who will discussthis subject and share the work experience of this Community around the world.

Finally, a heart-felt tribute to one of the most renowned authors, directors, actors and intellectuals of Italian Literature one year after his death and twenty years after his Nobel prize: we will celebrate Dario Fo by screening Dario Fo e Franca Rame: A Nobel for two, a docufilm on the life and work of this couple by Lorena Luciano and Filippo Piscopo and Sweet Democracy, one of the last films featuring this uforgettable actor as the protagonist; the director of this film, Michele Diomà together with Lorena Luciano and Filippo Piscopo will share their special memories of Dario Fo.
This tribute will strengthen the link that Fo has with the American culture. In fact, Fo is still one of the most popular European theatre authors in the U.S.
In sum, avery rich and fast-growing program with the aim to successfully convey the current heyday of the Italian fil industry with the hope to strengthen and maintain this link with New York for the years to come.
